Li Bai, Tax Official /

Li Bai, Tax Official
Li Bai, 李白
Sitting in a high-rise office
Filled his mind with navigating
Thorny tax issues for his government,
Building cases of who-owed what 断定谁欠钱
And who didn’t owe at all 而谁又能分文不缴
Scanning the forests of spreadsheets
And respecting the pavilions of power.
Li Bai, 李白
Suffered from a mind that wandered,
But which he tamed in order
To make the civil service
And avoid long trips to the countryside,
Great pastoral journeys of sacrifice
And resurrection of character,
A character that benefited little 不得志的天性
From great throngs of people 来自熙熙攘攘的人群
Chanting aloud in public places,
As much as that spirited part
Of his heart yearned for them 他的思绪在那逗留
And his mind lingered there.
Lingered there. Lingered there.
Li Bai 李白
Remembering a trip with his co-workers
Forgot about his forest of spreadsheets
And pavilions of plenty,
Thinking about the late night drinking,
The toasting – shot after shot,
The hazing of the colorful dresses of the women
Paid to sit by his side,
Feeding him words to songs he knew
From so long ago.
Li Bai, 李白
Remembered these things,
But did not linger on them.
He was lost in a different place,
That moment when everyone had left
And the woman by his side was gone
Forgetting to close the window shade,
Letting the moon shine in.
Li Bai, 李白
Lost himself in that frosty glow
That puddled beneath his feet
That took him back ages
That made him drown in nostalgia
Bringing words to his lips
He never knew he had,
Words he’d dare not write down.
Looking up, his mind reeled
And all alone
He toasted the moon.

Moon / 月亮

Moon 月亮
It’s a massive mistake
To restrict the beauty of the moon
To its ability to reflect the sun –
Only gazing when it is silver bright.
Can’t you see? The moon is the same every night –
Heavy black rock steady in our sky,
Circling our lives reliably,

Turning our tides affectionately –
The moon is not a body of illumination, but gravity –
Drawing us upwards away from the dust,
Just out of reach but never out of touch –
Never waning.
The moon moves every soft wind,
Every heaving ocean,
But here is the question:
Maybe the moon moves you 当你每次改变方向
Every time you change direction.

The Paramour / 情人

The Paramour 情人
You had a vision of her 你幻想着她
on the bed, legs cocked like pistols
in a black thong that hardly held a secret.
The body beside yours a map to the next one.
you felt that old litany
of desire rising like a wave,
foamy in the heart and around the eyes.
